Step-by-Step Guide: How to Open a Clam

Opening clams might seem tricky, but with our clam knife and a little practice, you’ll be shucking like a pro in no time. Make sure to have your clams rest on ice or in the refrigerator undisturbed for at least 15-20 min before attempting to shuck. This will allow them to relax their muscles and makes them infinitely easier to shuck. Then follow the steps below:

1. Prepare Your Workspace:
• Keep a towel handy to reduce excess water from affecting your grip and work area. 
• Have a bowl/tray of ice ready to place the opened clams in, keeping them fresh until you’re ready to serve.

2. Hold the Clam Steady:
• Place the clam in the palm of your hand with the back of the clam pressed against the base of your thumb. (See above photo)
• A towel can be used for extra grip and protection.

3. Insert the Clam Knife:
• Line up the blade of the clam knife between the lips of the clam with knife parallel to the clam's opening. 
• Using your fingers on the hand holding the clam, apply gentle but firm pressure to the dull side of the blade, pushing the sharp side of the blade into the clam. 

4. Cut the Muscle:
• Once the knife is inserted, slide it to either side of clam to cut the two muscles that hold the clam closed.
• You should feel the shell start to release as you work the knife around.

5. Open the Shell:
• Carefully twist the knife to pry the top shell open.
• Once opened enough you can use your hands to fully pry open the shell

6. Clean the Clam:
• Use the knife to gently separate the clam from the top and bottom shell, being careful not to spill any of the clam’s brine.
• Once fully separated, take the empty shell half, twist, and pull apart. 

7. Enjoy:
• Serve your clams on the half shell with your favorite accompaniments—perhaps a squeeze of lemon, a dash of hot sauce, or a side of cocktail sauce.
